Our founder grew up in a fishing community on the shores of Lake Victoria, where omena fed families and sustained livelihoods. Omena began with a simple belief: this familiar food deserved careful handling and dependable packaging, all the way to your table.

We buy directly from East African fishing communities at fair prices, working with fishermen who use responsible harvesting practices. From our roots in Kenya to our home in Texas, we bring a taste of that tradition to households and businesses across the USA.

What is omena?

Omena is a small freshwater fish from Lake Victoria, also known regionally as dagaa or mukene. A familiar part of East African cooking, it is eaten whole and enjoyed in tomato stews, coconut sauces and other everyday dishes. Our Omena pack is dried & fried, as shown on the label.
